Happy Earth Day from Silvermine Coffee Roasters!

Everything About Sustainable Coffee Byproducts

Hi there-- this is Josh with Silvermine Coffee Roasters! We've put together this write-up for anyone interested in the role coffee byproducts can play in your garden or compost bin. Want a specific write-up in the future? Let Us Know!

--------------------------------------------------

Responsible coffee sourcing, like with any international food product, is the biggest step in sustainable practice. But while we handle that end at the roastery by doing business with suppliers committed to sustainability, how can the average coffee consumer make a difference?

Turns out, there are two generally overlooked options for how to use coffee byproduct for a better purpose than the landfill. The first byproduct is Chaff, and the second byproduct is Used Coffee Grounds. We suspect you've heard of at least one of those, but let's get started with Chaff.

--------------------------------------------------

Coffee Chaff, the thin, papery layer shed during roasting, is rich in carbon and makes an excellent addition to compost. It helps balance nitrogen-heavy food scraps, improves airflow in compost piles, and breaks down quickly, accelerating the composting process. When added to soil, chaff enhances structure and promotes healthy microbial activity.

Recommendation: Use Coffee Chaff for composting as a “brown” material, as mulch to help retain soil moisture, or as a light soil amendment to improve texture and support healthy plant growth. (Ask your local roaster if they can part with any!)

--------------------------------------------------

Used Coffee Grounds, on the other hand, are nitrogen-rich and ideal for enriching garden soil. They can be mixed directly into compost or used as a natural fertilizer for plants like tomatoes, spinach, and herbs. Grounds also help retain soil moisture and can even deter certain pests—making them a simple, chemical-free gardening solution.

Recommendation: Used Coffee Grounds are perfect for composting as a “green” material, mixing directly into garden beds for added nutrients, or sprinkling around plants to help with moisture retention and natural pest deterrence.

--------------------------------------------------

Here at the roastery, we know sustainability starts at origin and extends to every step of the process. While we work on long-term sustainability for small producers through responsible suppliers, we hope everyone can commit at least a little bit to making this planet a nicer place to live.

By reusing coffee byproducts at home—whether composting chaff or repurposing grounds—you’re extending that same commitment to sustainability full circle. From farm to cup to garden, our coffee has you covered.
